Get to know our Case Manager Heather Hicks! Heather, who has been with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Indiana staff since March 2020, enjoys getting to know Bigs, Littles, and their
families. She is originally from Indianapolis and attend Indiana University.
“Helping matches build relationships, watching their successes, and seeing kiddos hit milestones and goals gives me a sense of accomplishment, a feeling of community,” says Heather.
One of her favorite match activities is watching the Littles show off their creativity and joy during pumpkin carving in the fall. She loves seeing kids and adults act silly. To her, each and
every match is special and fun!
“Sometimes I think mentors feel like they have to be serious to make an impact,” says Heather. “But the moments where Bigs cut loose and act like weirdos are some of the best moments in a match!”
When she’s not working, you can find Heather reading a book, chilling with her children both
furry and human, and hitting yard sales with her mom or hanging out with her friends. The last book she read was Iona Iverson's Rules for Commuting. She defines herself as a social justice warrior, impatient, and loves the challenge of being frugal with money.
She wants mentors to believe in what they have to offer the youth in our program. She believes Big Brothers Big Sisters is important because life is difficult and the youth in our community need all hands-on-deck to help them succeed.
“There isn’t a mold for “perfect” mentor,” Heather says.
“Everyone has SOMETHING to offer a kiddo in our program. You don’t have to be the smartest, the fittest, the funniest, the most athletic, the richest. You just have to BE THERE.”
