Big Spotlight: Scott

Meet Big Brother Scott! Scott has been matched with his Little Brother Mario (12) for just shy of 2 years. And he’s living proof that everyone has time to mentor a child, to defend the potential of youth, and make a difference in the world. Shortly after being matched with Mario, Scott embarked on a new entrepreneurial project, the Barker Brewhouse. Here’s what Scott has to say!

1. What is Barker Brewhouse? And how long has it been in the works?

Barker Brewhouse is a Craft Beer Taphouse and Brewery located on the west side of Evansville. We started the process of buying the building in early 2022 and started the demo and remodel in July 2022.

2. What is your vision for the space?

Barker Brewhouse is a family and dog-friendly place where people can come together to enjoy a wide variety of craft beer, ciders, seltzers, and wine. The overall vision of the space is to bring the laid-back brewery vibe to the westside. It’s a space where you can work, read a book, play games, or even celebrate special occasions!

3. Who was your most important mentor growing up? Has he or she been involved in your decision to become an entrepreneur as an adult?

I would credit my hardworking parents and a few family friends as being my mentors growing up. I was fortunate to have several role models and mentors that I pulled inspiration and lessons from. I have most definitely leaned on each one of them during the process of creating Barker Brewhouse.

4. What inspired you to become a Big Brother in the BBBS program? It was something I was always interested in doing. It was a goal of mine to become a mentor to a kid that may not have had the same resources I had growing up.

5. Creating a brewhouse is time-consuming. How have you found time for your Little Brother during the renovations?

Luckily, Mario and his Mom have been very supportive and understanding when it comes to my time commitments. We still made time for movies, arcades, and time at the lake during the summer. It is something that I made a commitment to so we would pick a day every couple of weeks and stick to it. We also would come to the brewhouse during construction so he could check out the progress.

6. Has your Little been involved with any of the renovations? Has he learned any new skills during this process?

He has! We practiced using a tape measure, drill, and of course safety while on a construction site. He put together one of the tables in the tap room with an impact drill and socket set. We also have measurements and plans to make a giant Jenga set for the outdoor patio area soon.

7. What has been your favorite part of mentoring your Little Brother?

My favorite part of mentoring Mario would definitely be getting to know the different facets of his personality. Once he came out of his shell (which didn’t take long) I got to know a serious, hilariously funny, caring, self-aware, and introspective kid.

8. What would you like kids in the community to know about being an entrepreneur?

It’s important for any kid to be aware of the different ways to make a living. As a kid you always hear “Do you want to be a teacher, fireman, doctor, lawyer, etc.” which is great, we need every one of those professions to help make the world go around but, there are many other paths that can be taken that you don’t hear much about as a kid. Entrepreneurship is a lot of work, but if they have a dream, they should go for it head-on!

9. How will Barker Brewhouse make a difference in the community? Is there space for local non-profit organizations?

Absolutely! We have already hosted a Big Appreciation Event for BBBS and have held an after-party for our Over the Edge for Granted team “The Star-Spangled Danglers.” Barker Brewhouse is very committed to community outreach and plans to be a spot for meetings, parties, and fundraising events.

10. If you could send a message to people considering becoming a Big, what would you want them to know?

Stop considering and do it. Being a Big can be challenging at times but it will not only change your Littles life it will change yours for the better as well.
